The Connecticut Hedge Fund Association pleased to kick off its 2016 programming year with a symposium focused on allocation opportunities for CT based and other preferred managers.

The program will feature Deborah Spalding, CIO of the CT Retirement Plans Trust Funds to discuss programs available within CT to foster the growth of CT based, women or minority owned firms. Also joining the discussion is Andrew Finver of San Francisco based Progress Investment Management Company. Progress specifically targets women and minority owned firms for its institutional mandates.

The symposium will be moderated by Steve Kennedy of Albourne, one of the world's largest alternative investment consulting firms.

Deborah C. Spalding, CFA - Chief Investment Officer at the Connecticut Office of the State Treasurer Treasurer

Deborah Spalding is the Chief Investment Officer at the Connecticut Office of the State Treasurer, which oversees the $28 billion Connecticut Retirement Plans and Trust Funds. Her responsibilities include managing all aspects of the investment process, including investment strategy, manager oversight and monitoring, and recommending changes to investment policies and asset allocation. Prior to this, she served as Deputy Chief Investment Officer for the Office of the Treasurer.

Before joining the State of Connecticut, she was a Managing Partner at Working Lands Investment Partners, LLC, an independent investment management firm specializing in rapidly growing markets for environmental credits. She has also served as Executive Director and Head of International Investments for Schroder Investment Management and as Managing Director/Head of International Institutional Investments at Scudder Kemper Investments. She began her career as a financial analyst at SKBA Capital Management, responsible for the electric utilities, food, and building materials industries.

Spalding is a former trustee of the Robert & Patricia Switzer Foundation and the Green Century Funds. She has also served as Board Chair of the National Wildlife Federation, and has been a Lecturer in Forest & Ecosystem Finance at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies.

Spalding earned a B.A. from Tufts University and has a Master’s degree in East Asian Religion from Harvard University, an MBA from the University of California at Berkeley, and a Master of Forestry from Yale University. She is a Chartered Financial Analyst.

 

Andrew Finver - Director of Hedge Fund Research, Progress Investment Management Company

Andrew is responsible for leading the research and manager sourcing for the firm’s Hedge Fund platform. Andrew is involved with the selection and portfolio construction with regards to emerging hedge funds. Andrew has over 14 years of experience, most recently as the director of U.S. research for The Torrey Funds, an emerging manager fund of funds.

At Torrey, Andrew was a partner, served on the Investment Committee, and helped triple the firm’s AUM. Prior to Torrey, Andrew was an analyst at Valenzuela Capital Partners and an associate in GE Capital’s Structured Finance Group.

He started his career in HSBC’s merger & acquisitions team. Andrew earned a bachelor of arts degree in political studies/ psychology from Pitzer College in Claremont, CA, and a masters in international affairs from Columbia University.

 

Steve Kennedy - Partner, Portfolio Analyst, Albourne America LLC

Steve Kennedy joined Albourne in April 2006 as a Senior Portfolio Analyst. Steve is a partner and is lead consultant to public and corporate plans, large Endowments, Foundations and Family Offices.

Steve was previously Director of Research (global equity and fixed income asset managers, hedge funds and private equity funds) from 2000-2006 at Harris myCFO. Prior to myCFO, Steve was a Vice-President of the multi-manager Investment Management Consulting program, Senior Manager/Research Analyst, from 1997-2000 at Banc of America Securities.

Steve holds a MS in Investment Management from Boston University Graduate School of Management (USA) in addition to a BA in Environmental Policy and Analysis from Boston University (USA). Steve is also a CFA charter holder.
