Event Details - Thursday, September 14th

The September 14th CTHFA event will focus on Autonomous Learning Investment Strategies (ALIS) and how it is rapidly transforming the investment management business. With the confluence of machine learning, data science and record low processing costs, ALIS are going mainstream. Recently, BlackRock made headlines based on the restructuring of its active management business. According to Blackrock, “Traditional methods of equity investing are being reshaped by massive advances in technology and data sciences…Asset managers who simply use the same techniques and tools from the past will limit their ability to generate alpha and deliver on client expectations.”

Join us for an insightful discussion from a panel of leaders in Autonomous Learning Investment Strategies featuring Michael Weinberg, Chief Investment Strategist at Protege Partners and Dr. David Andre co-founder, CEO, and Chief Technology Officer of Cerebellum Capital in San Francisco and Jeff Holman of Sentient Investment Management.

Dr. David Andre - CEO and Chief Technology Officer, Cerebellum Capital, Inc.

Dr. David Andre is a scientist, inventor, and entrepreneur who applies his expertise in statistical machine learning to build companies centered around the intelligent use of data and automated learning. He co-founded Cerebellum Capital, Inc, where he is presently the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Technology Officer. Cerebellum Capital is a hedge fund management firm whose investment programs are based on a largely automated process for discovering financial trading strategies, evaluating strategies as to the likelihood that they’ll generalize to unseen data, and combining strategies to optimize the likelihood of significant steady return.

David has more than twenty years of experience working in what is now called data science. Prior to starting Cerebellum Capital, he was Director of Informatics at BodyMedia, Inc, where he built the core algorithms that power the most accurate wearable device for calculating energy expenditure in free-living situations. BodyMedia was acquired by Jawbone in 2013.

In 1996, he helped to start Blue Pumpkin Software, a workforce management software company that was sold to Witness Systems in 2005. Dr. Andre also worked as an engineer with Genetic Algorithm Technology Corporation, Canon Research Center of America, and the Theoretical Chemistry group at Ames Laboratory.

Jeff Holman - Chief Investment Officer, Sentient Investment Management

Jeff Holman is chief investment officer at Sentient Investment Management, the trading and investment arm of Sentient Technologies.

He joined Sentient from Highbridge Capital Management, where he was a Managing Director and Chief Risk Officer. He began his career at Citadel Investment Group where he led quantitative research and portfolio construction efforts for the Global Equities team. Following Citadel, he was a Portfolio Manager for international equity strategies at Fuller & Thaler Asset Management.

Mr. Holman earned a B.A. in Applied Mathematics and Statistics, an M.A. in Statistics, and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley where his research involved modeling left tail correlation between investment strategies, and the behavioral economic implications of fallible memory.

Michael Oliver Weinberg, CFA - Chief Investment Officer - Senior Managing Director, MOV37 & Protégé Partners.

For more than two decades Michael has invested directly at the security level and indirectly as an asset allocator in traditional and alternative asset classes.

He is the Chief Investment Officer at MOV37 and Protege Partners, where he is a Senior Managing Director, and on the investment, management and risk committees. Michael is also an adjunct Associate Professor of Economics and Finance at Columbia Business School, where he teaches Pension, Sovereign and Institutional Investing, an advanced MBA course that he created.

He was a portfolio manager and global head of equities at FRM, a multi-strategy investment solutions provider. Prior to that, Michael was a portfolio manager at Soros, the macro fund and family office, and at Credit Suisse First Boston. Before that he was a Real Estate analyst at Dean Witter.

Michael is a board member of AIMA and on its Research Committee. Michael is Chair of the Value Investing Committee at NYSSA, where he has received multiple awards, including Volunteer of the Year.

Michael is a published author, having written articles for The New York Times, Institutional Investor, CFA Institute and CAIA. He has been interviewed by the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, CNBC, Bloomberg and Reuters. Michael is a frequent panelist, moderator and lecturer for investment banks, institutional and family office organizations and business schools, including Institutional Investor, Pensions & Investments, SALT, Harvard and The London School of Economics.
